When you are working on your dissertation you will need to do research. Usually your college or university will tell you the acceptable research methods to choose from but you will need to decide which type fits your proposal. 

Your research methods are how you will go about doing the project that you have chosen to do. Some of the questions you will answer include, "What data is important to analyze?" "How will you collect your data?" "What procedures are important to conduct your research?" and finally, "What will you do with the data?" 

Within this framework you are attempting to why you conducted your research in the way that you have chosen.  The dissertation method you use will depend on your research questions and goals for your research.  

The PhD dissertation method section will be developed using four parts: you will have participants, instruments of measurements (the way you will measure your results), the procedures you will use and your data analysis.  

Methods of data collection are also different and the customary ways to collect data include surveys, interviews, questionnaires or case studies. The researcher chooses the method depending on the type of information they want to collect. What ever way they collect it, part of the method section will be to show that they learned how to analyze data throughout their course work. They will also give the benefits or limitations that they found. 

Some of the data that will be collected will come through the demographics of the individuals that you research. For instance, you will gather data on gender, age, race, sexuality, beliefs, educational level and other information that is pertinent to your study.  

Surveys

Many people choose to use surveys as a way of conducing research. This is an easy method once you have compiled the surveys. You can do them online or in person, and there are positives and negatives for each on. 

Interviews

These can be done over the phone or in person. Many people use interviews when they want to get specific information from a specific population. The interview is one way to cut down on people who may not give you the correct information on a survey. 

Questionnaires

Similar to the surveys, these tend to be longer and ask more questions. The questionnaire is also used when you want to get specific information from a certain population.
